When the temperature plummets, the EPDM is allowed to contract and then it is allowed to expand in times of hot conditions. With using plastics in the manufacturing process, the sheeting does not become brittle over time due to the constant expanding and contracting.

In fact, there is a standard requirement that all EPDM membranes show no cracking after being exposed for 4,000 hours. However, Firestone membranes have been shown to resist cracking and crazing for over 10,000 hours of exposure.
